Kaupapa

Our kaupapa:

To be the premier organisation having a positive impact on current levels of literacy in our community
(LAW Strategic Plan)

We are:

  • a community-based and not-for-profit incorporated society (since 1984, as Adult Reading and Learning Assistance, ARLA)

  • a training centre of excellence - with skilled staff, NZQA registration, and robust quality assurance processes (including external auditing )

  • a branch/ poupou of a Treaty-based national organisation, Literacy Aotearoa Inc.

As a Treaty-based organisation, we demonstrate:

  • Rangatiratanga - acknowledging and developing independence. It is critical that a learner is empowered - breaking the cycle of dependency

  • Kawanatanga - being learner-centred. It is critical for us to address the needs of learners

  • Manaakitanga - having working relationships built upon mutual respect and trust. We work with and rely upon people, both inside and outside Literacy Aotearoa. Individual and community partnerships are critical to overcoming literacy barriers

  • Whanaungatanga - ensuring personal care and support for our learners, staff and stakeholders.
