Become A Volunteer
Why volunteer as an adult literacy tutor?
1 in 5 New Zealand adults have difficulties with literacy and numeracy (2006 ALLS Survey), and the evidence shows that these issues have a detrimental effect on their ability to gain employment, get qualified or to take advantage of opportunities for promotion.
Aside from the personal consequences of literacy issues, families, communities and industry are also affected. Kids with parents who can read to them and help them with their homework are more likely to succeed, communities with citizens who are informed and engaged are vibrant and democratically robust, and workplaces with literate employees are more productive and avoid miscommunication and accidents.
Volunteers play a vital role in helping New Zealanders with literacy issues achieve their potential, and Literacy Aotearoa Wellington always wants to here from motivated and committed individuals who want to help.
